[TRIGGER WARNING for victim blaming] Police officer ejaculates on woman, and is found not guilty of felony charges  → ocweekly.com

No one disputes that an on-duty Irvine police officer got an erection and ejaculated on a motorist during an early-morning traffic stop in Laguna Beach. The female driver reported it, DNA testing confirmed it and officer David Alex Park finally admitted it.

When the case went to trial, however, defense attorney Al Stokke argued that Park wasn’t responsible for making sticky all over the woman’s sweater. He insisted that she made the married patrolman make the mess—after all, she was on her way home from work as a dancer at Captain Cream Cabaret.

“She got what she wanted,” said Stokke. “She’s an overtly sexual person.”

Fuck pigs.

WOW! This happened in 2011. The jury consisted of one woman. The rest were white men, most in their 50’s. What happened to jury of your peers? The defense was that she got what she wanted because she’s a stripper. This one is unbelievable.

Dodgers File For Bankruptcy → sports.espn.go.com

Yesterday the Dodgers celebrated after avoiding a sweep by their American League neighbors; thanks in large part to a blown call at the plate.  This morning the Los Angeles Dodgers filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Dodgers have been a part of my life since childhood; I remember getting a free baseball helmet at the very first game I attended and an unmatched feeling when the field opened up as I walked to my seat.  I remember the Kirk Gibson home run, the best moment in L.A. Dodger history.  I remember having no idea that the ‘92 riots had broken out because I was at a Dodger game that night.  My cousin and I walked to my house after the game not realizing that police were in full force all over our burning city (pre cell phone era).  I remember the excitement in my daughter’s face as I took her to her first Dodger game in 2009, it reminded me a little of my first Dodger game.

The demise of the Dodgers began many years ago when they went from being owned by an amazing baseball family who cared about the fans, the organization, and winning to being owned by a faceless corporation, and later Frank McCourt. Since the O’Malleys gave up the team it has been one disappointment after another.

Mike Scioscia, legendary Dodger catcher, wanted to be a Dodger manager.  The organization didn’t want him so he took the short drive to Anaheim where he was immediately accepted and got the team playing 1980’s Dodger baseball, leading them to a World Series victory in 2002.  While the Angels were winning with a Dodger at the helm, the Dodgers were happy just keeping a team that would compete to keep the crowds coming in, despite ticket prices going up every year since Fox Sports purchased the team.

The team’s winning ways are long gone; instead the team put all its money, that which was not going to McCourt’s pockets, into one high profile player at a time.  The last of which was Manny Ramirez.  The merchandise sales and tickets in the Mannywood section of the park seemed to be enough for the front office, who needs a championship when you have money and a blindingly devoted fan base?

The 2010 season ended with the San Francisco Giants celebrating their first World Series victory since making the east to west move.  The Dodgers weren’t in contention.  They weren’t even a hurdle to the Giants, let alone a rival.

This year we were given the chance to redeem ourselves by starting out the season at home against the World Champions; the league’s attempt at reviving one of the best rivalries in baseball.  The Dodgers actually won that game but nobody was talking about that because two drunken idiots who the media calls “fans” decided to jump a man for wearing a Giants jersey.  The man was practically left brain-dead in what has been the biggest embarrassment to the city and Dodger organization in recent history.  While this was not McCourt’s fault he also didn’t address the issue properly, he showed very little compassion and felt there was nothing that he could have done to prevent the event.  This was not McCourt’s fault but I doubt this would have happened if the O’Malleys were still running the team.

I have always been a Dodger fan and will continue to be a Dodger fan.  The only thing that would change that would be if Selig allowed the team to leave the city.  Based on everything we’ve endured thanks to Selig’s decisions on the ownership of the team, I doubt he’d disrespect our city that way.  I’m still proud to wear Dodger blue in the middle of this low point in Dodger history.  I also don’t expect the Dodgers to reach the top until this financial mess is settled and we’re once again owned by people who care about the loyal fans, the legendary organization, and most importantly, winning.

Red-Light Cameras Are Going Away In Los Angeles → echopark.patch.com

Not everyone on the city council agrees these should go away but as of right now the red-light camera program is scheduled to be killed on July 31.

“We should be a fair city, not a fine city. A fine city is one that just puts fines everywhere. We should be fair to the people we represent,” —Councilman Tom LaBonge

My opinion has always been that these cameras do nothing to improve safety; this has been the selling point of the program’s supporters.  Studies in past years have shown that while red light infractions have gone up at camera-equipped intersections, accidents have not decreased.  This program was never meant to “improve safety” but rather to get more money out of the city’s many drivers.  It’s about time these go away.
